The Genesis Sunday School Class

    Oct 2, 2022 |

Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in Wesley 208 Classroom

The Genesis Class has been a vital part in the life of FUMC Hurst for forty years. Each Sunday morning, facilitators inside and outside of their class bring interesting and challenging lessons on a variety of topics. Recently, Genesis completed their year as a Disciple 6 Class. This means that in six of the last twelve months, they participated in focused lessons on the Six Essentials of Connect Discipleship—Worshiping, Praying, Learning, Caring/Sharing, Tithing and Serving. Genesis is a group of disciples who worship and pray together, learn together and care for each other. And, they take seriously the call to support the church financially and serve others. Thank you, Genesis, for all that you do in the name of Christ.

“How do you put into just a couple of sentences how much a group means to you?  Genesis is a group the is always there to be with you to celebrate moments of joy and success and in the difficult times.  The members of this class challenge me to be bolder in expressing my faith in God as well as looking for ways to serve this church and community.  My life would be poorer without them." —Susan Radde

“Genesis Class has been a grounding presence in my life for 35 years, an important part of my church family.  We have grown together as Christians through study, discussions, prayer and outreach to others beyond the class and church.  We have helped each other raise our children, care for aging parents, supported each other as children and spouses have died, encouraged each other as our bodies change with our age, celebrating our lives through laughter, tears, and love." —Karen Murphy

“My relationship with God has grown closer through our in- depth  lessons and discussions. I feel the members are my “village”. We are there for each other." —Susan Gebren

“I am comfortable with the Genesis family. I can say what I think about a subject and not be ridiculed for a different way of thinking.” —Everal Myers

“Genesis Class has stood the test of time; existing for over 40 years and experiencing a lot of life together - celebrating the joyous good times and supporting each other during the painful struggles and heartaches.

Genesis class members are eager to learn and willing to listen to others and their opinions.  This willingness to listen and learn is key to our continued growth in understanding and living according to God’s Word.

Genesis class has always been involved in the ministries of FUMC Hurst.  We help others through volunteering at Mission Central, Coat of Many Colors, Mobile Food Pantry, church events, and more.  When we can’t be there physically, we support several ministries with our monetary gifts.” —Bill and Pat Webb

“The Friday before, my wife Georgeann awoke feeling better than she had in months. We were encouraged since her “markers” had been showing improvement for the past few weeks. We had a good breakfast and called some of the friends who had been wanting to visit. But, by Saturday afternoon, she was getting worse and Monday morning she was admitted to the hospital. Georgeann’s condition continued to deteriorate and on Wednesday morning, she was taken to ICU.

I hung back in the room, collecting stuff that I figured did not need to stay. I headed to the ICU where I was stopped and told I had to wait in the Waiting Room and they would come for me when they had her comfortable.

My wife had been taken away and I wanted to be with her. I had nobody and I was scared and shocked. I had been to the ICU waiting room before so I knew the layout—fairly good size room with a few chairs and couches, a soft drink machine in the corner.

As I pushed open the door, I was greeted by what seemed to be the entire Genesis Class. I suspect the total crowd was around 30 people. To this day I do not know how or who assembled this body of friends. All I know is that they made the waiting for the inevitable news bearable. I could feel the love and it made all the difference.

And that is why I love the Genesis Class.” —David Gallian

“We joined the Genesis Class in 1983, and they made us feel at home immediately.  They were very active in the church and with missions which were areas we want to be involved in.  From the Sunday School lessons to the class activities, we have always felt like we were a family serving together.” —Mike and Mary Bowen
