Backpack Ministry Update

    Nov 21, 2023 | by Carolyn Kitchens

It takes a village to raise a child, and it also takes a village of FUMC Hurst workers and school district administrators to collaborate to feed hungry children.

One of our Donna Park Elementary teams and the principal of Donna Park, Julie McAvoy, stopped long enough one autumn day to pose for a picture after the team delivered four tubs of backpack food to students at Donna Park. Our packing teams depend upon the man-power provided by several of our guys to lift, load and deliver each week up to four tubs to each of our three elementary schools. We welcome any other able-bodied men who would be able to volunteer each Tuesday.

All the food that is currently being delivered each week to 120 children at the three neighborhood elementary schools is provided by the loving generosity of FUMC Hurst members. The outpouring of love and donations given to the Adopt-A-Backpack initiative that began in August now totals $37,000 and will feed up to 150 students each week through this 2023-2024 school year. Knowing that Texas is the second hungriest state in the United States as reported by the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s October report, FUMC Hurst is prepared for requests from our schools for more backpacks as the year progresses; and, because of your response to this need, we will be able to honor these requests.

Thank you from our Backpack Ministry Teams.
