Each year, FUMC Hurst provides Thanksgiving meals to more than 1,000 local families in need.

“We are so thankful for what your church does for us.  It is always so hard and this food helps relieve some of the worries I have right now.”

These words, from a family member who received one of the past Thanksgiving bags, remind us how important this effort can be for families in our area. Soon our atrium will be filled with bags.  Our goal is to have at least 1,000 bags this year to help the 1,000+ families who have requested assistance.

Bag distribution will begin Sunday, October 27 and will continue through Sunday, November 10 or until all bags have been distributed.

Here are ways you can help with this project:

  • Donate one bag (or more!). The food list is:  Thanksgiving bag mission
Canned Fruit: 2 cans (15 ounces)
Sweet Potatoes/Yams: 1 large or 2 small cans
Green Beans: 2 cans (14 ounces)
Stuffing Mix: 1 bag (14 to 16 oz.)
Instant Mashed Potatoes: 1 box (13+ oz.)
        Cranberry Sauce: 1 can
        Turkey Gravy Mix: 2 packets
        Jiffy Cornbread Mix: 2 boxes
Brownie Mix (or other complete boxed dessert mix)

Please do not make any substitutions or leave anything out.
  • Bring your bags to the atrium no later than Sunday, November 17!

  • Donate for the cost of a turkey. (Mark your check "Thanksgiving turkeys" in the memo line.)

  • Contact Sharon Stillinger if you would to volunteer on pick up or delivery days, November 22 & 23 – we’ll need volunteers to: check-in families and hand out bags/turkeys from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. on Saturday; deliver baskets on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon; trucks for turkey pick ups both Friday and Saturday morning at Wal-Mart; Spanish speakers to help translate on both days.

  • Make a Thanksgiving card – we will give one to every family that gets a basket. These always put a smile on their faces! Drop cards off in the atrium on Sunday, November 17, or during the week until Friday, November 15. (Please don't sign the card with your last name.)

  • Pray for the project, families and volunteers.

Please contact Sharon Stillinger, smstillinger@verizon.net, if you would like to volunteer or have any questions!

Thank you for your continued generosity!
