Post It Notes are the Best!

by Rev. Donna McKee on September 15, 2021

Post It Notes are the best. They come in all different sizes and colors. They’re convenient when you want to jot down a phone number or a short grocery list. And, they stick to almost anything!!! I love Post Its and always have a stash of them around because I’ve been known to use an inordinate amount of them in my daily life.

A couple of months ago, my daughter came to spend the night with me. I went to work the next morning and left her to sleep in for a while. By the time I got home later in the day, she had gone home to Dallas. I went to fill a glass with ice and there was a Post It Note—in my freezer—stuck to the icemaker. The message said, "Hope this makes you smile today!" Needless to say, it did make me smile. I went to my closet to change clothes and found another one on my bathroom mirror that said, "You are beautiful!" and another one in my closet that said, "What did the blanket say as it fell off the bed? Oh sheet!"

Over the next few days, I found Post It messages hidden in obscure places all over my house. Some were love notes—"I love U!" Some were bad jokes—"What type of bee can’t make up its mind? A may-be!" Some were just random messages—"Really? Black pants again?" or "I wish we were on vacation!" I found them hidden in books I was reading, inside my laptop computer and, several weeks later, I found one in an office drawer I rarely open.

Every single time I found a note it made me happy to think about my funny, thoughtful daughter. Each one made me think about the time she spent on this simple, sweet act of love. I told her how fun it was to find all the messages and she said she loved doing it—thinking about what to say, what would make me laugh, looking up jokes on her phone as she went along. She said it made her happy too.

God is always sending me (us?) messages—some little and some big. I sometimes recognize them on bumper stickers, in sermons, when a cardinal lands on my birdfeeder or in a friend’s word of grace. I haven’t gotten a Post It from God—but who knows? Receiving these divine messages sometimes makes me smile or cry or laugh out loud or roll my eyes. I wonder if God loves sending messages as much as I (we?) love receiving them? I think so.
