Making a Difference

November 12, 2020

Mulume and Herschel

You have heard the old saying, “never underestimate the difference you can make in the lives of others.” Is that true? Mulume Musa's story might answer that question.

Mulume Musa is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa). He spent many years in Belgium before coming to the United States in 2012. When he arrived in the US, he was unable to speak English, only French.  The language barrier made it extremely difficult to interact socially and to accomplish tasks that most English speakers take for granted. He was living in isolation.

One day, he visited me in my office to talk about the difficulties he had been experiencing since arriving in the United States. At the end of our conversation, I shared information about the First United Methodist Church of Hurst's English program for French speaking African immigrants, and he decided to enroll.

With basic knowledge of English language acquired in our English program at the church, Mulume has become more confident and more comfortable. He has increased his understanding of American culture and developed a respect for living in a multicultural society. He is now able to communicate with his American friends using English and to accomplish things like shopping by himself. He was able to fill out a job application and to communicate successfully during an interview. Finally, he got a job!

Two weeks ago, he sent me a note saying, “Thank you to First United Methodist Church of Hurst, to FUMC Hurst's English instructor, Mrs. Vicki Ingle, and to you Reverend Joseph, the director of Ministries with African immigrants at the church. You have made a big difference in my life in this country.”

No matter where we are in our life, there is always a way to make a difference in someone’s life. I believe that, even the smallest of acts can make a considerable impact on someone’s life and can help make big changes that will be felt and deeply appreciated.
