We take for granted that we will always have an ample supply of clean water for drinking, cooking, and bathing. We are indeed fortunate, but in many developing countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an adequate water supply is not readily available.  Think about these observations:

  • In developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to contaminated water supplies.
  • One out of every five deaths of children under age five is due to water-related disease.
  • The weight of the filled water containers that women in Africa carry on their heads is equivalent to the maximum baggage weight allowed by airlines--about 44 pounds.
  • The average distance that women walk to collect water is almost four miles, greatly reducing the time they have for other productive work.
  • In some parts of Africa, women spend as much as 85% of their daily energy intake gathering water, increasing cases of anemia and other health problems.
  • Although the democratic Republic of the Congo is Africa’s most water-rich country, only 26% of the population has access to safe water.

This summer, we will be accepting donations for Water Is Life, a project that will finance the construction of a desperately needed water well in the area served by Jonathan and Donna Baker, our missionaries to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Several volunteers from the Men’s Breakfast group will assist in our project by staffing a table where you can bring your contributions on Sunday mornings during Coffee Fellowship. The collection bucket will be available from
9:15-9:40 a.m. and from 10:30-10:50 a.m. each Sunday from until August 27.

Of course, you may contribute online or write a check and place it in the offering basket during the worship services. Important: On the front of your check, please write “Water Well fund” or “Water Is Life project” on the memo line.

The cost of constructing a motorized well is approximately $40,000, which we have established as our goal. With your help, your contributions and your prayers, we will provide sufficient funds to drill a sustainable well and thus provide water to a community of about 8,000 people.

Water Is Life, and we all have an opportunity to share in providing this essential resource.
