Our 2009-2010 Hurst Series promises to be exciting!
Music has the power to uplift us and inspire us like nothing else can—we hope you will join us for these wonderful musical events.
In September, we welcome Earlene Rentz to September Songs. The Music Ministry will join forces with two area choir programs—Central and Harwood Junior High schools of HEB ISD—to present a concert of original music by a contemporary composer. Dr. Rentz is a sought-after composer and clinician, and you will enjoy her music and these fine choirs.
In December, Organist/Artist-in-Residence Dong-ill Shin will present an organ concert featuring compositions by William Bolcom, César Franck and C.M. Widor, and other selected seasonal favorites. His artistry and technique at the organ is phenomenal, and you won’t want to miss this extraordinary concert.
December also brings Festival of Carols, an annual presentation from our Music Ministry to the community, featuring a full choir, professional orchestra and handbells— all playing your favorite Christmas music! Tickets for these performances are free, but go very quickly. Please order your tickets early.
In March 2010, the Hurst Series presents Keyboards Alive! featuring the talents of organist Dong-ill Shin with pianist Shield Collins Bray, principal keyboardist of the Fort Worth Symphony. This dynamic duo will present an electrifying concert of works written for piano and organ that will leave you mesmerized.
Each year, the Music Ministry presents a major choral work on Good Friday. This year’s work is the Requiem by Gabriel Fauré to be presented with choir, orchestra and soloists. Fauré’s music is lyrical, melodic and distinctly French, providing a beautiful message of hope and resurrection against Good Friday’s stark images of crucifixion.
In May, the Hurst Series welcomes the professional chamber choir Orpheus—24 of the finest singers in the Metroplex. They will be joined by the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas.
This season of the Hurst Series promises something for everyone!
I look forward to seeing you here.
Greg Shapley, Minister of Music and Worship
