History

First United Methodist Church of Hurst began in 1866 as  Isham Chapel Methodist Protestant Church, named after its organizing pastor, Rev. Marion Isham.  It was located at 9200 Trammel Davis Road (just east of Precinct Line Road, near the River Trails area). The members originally met in a log building.

In 1876, a small frame structure was built. This included split-log pews, and men and women sat on separate sides of the church. From 1879 to 1891, the church was also used as a community school.

A tablernacle was built in 1915.  Revivals were started that year.  They began the first Sunday of every August and lasted a week or more. These were attended by nearly everyone in the community and continued for more than 35 years. In 1919, the Ladies Missionary Society was started by the wife of the pastor.

Hurst grew significantly after Bell Helicopter was built. As Hurst grew, so did the church’s membership. A new building was needed to accommodate the growing membership of Isaham Church.  The last Methodist service in the frame structure was on February 17, 1952. The land was sold to another denomination.  The main building was destroyed in a fire of unknown origin in July 1952. The site is now a mobile home park.

The new church was located at 129 Harmon Road, and the name was changed to Hurst First Methodist Church. An additional worship service was added as the church continued to grow. Soon the congregation again outgrew its building.

The first service at the new (and current) location, 530 Elm Street, was on May 17, 1964. In 1968, the Methodists merged with the Evangelical United Brethren, and the church name was changed to First United Methodist Church of Hurst. In 1976, the church was expanded to include a parlor, kitchen, choir hall, chapel, offices, and classrooms, all part of the current buildings in use today.

The current sanctuary was built in 1988 (the former sanctuary is now the Anderson Youth Center). In 2000, the Wesley Building was built, adding more than 37,000 square feet to the church.  The Wesley Building includes a new kitchen, more classrooms, and a Fellowship Hall.  As a part of the expansion, the children and youth areas were renovated.

Membership continues to grow as First United Methodist Church of Hurst engages in our significant ministry in Northeast Tarrant County.
