Later Isham Chapel 1915-1952A tabernacle was built in 1915 and was used as long as the church remained at that site for summer services, socials, revivals, and homecomings. The church's annual homecoming was organized in 1916 under the direction of the pastor, G.C. Davis. An undated newspaper article stated: "The 50 members of our congregation will welcome back at an all day service those with whom they previously worshipped, but who have moved away. A basket luncheon will be spread on the grounds. There will be talks by member, recalling old memories. It will be a different meeting that Isham Chapel members will gather late this month for the anniversary event. Fifty-nine years ago, in a thatched arbor near the present site, tall farmer boys in homespun suits sat with bowed heads near pretty girls in calico for services. Outside, instead of rows of shiny automobiles, groups of buggies were hitched." It was customary to start a revival the first Sunday in August each year. It lasted a week or more and was attended by everyone in the community. During the revivals, parents would leave their babies asleep in wagons that were pulled close and hitched to large oak trees. One night, some of the teenagers traded the sleeping babies and the exchanges were not discovered until the parents got home. Without telephones, it was quite some time before all babies were back with their own parents! Next page |
