“... for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”
United Methodist Women is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
The UMW of First United Methodist Church of Hurst is concerned with spiritual growth, mission education, Christian social involvement, and local and global support for women, children, and youth. Members are involved through prayer, giving, attending meetings, study, action, and service. UMW of First United Methodist Church has day and evening circles. All circles participate in various projects, Harvest Festival, and the annual Tea and Thee.
These are a few examples of the local and global ministries that our UMW members share:
In 2010 the unit assembled, donated and delivered 500 birthing kits to UMCOR
The circles send greeting cards to missionaries all over the world
Monetary gifts have been given to Cookson Hill Center in Oklahoma, ZOE Ministries in Africa, Red Bird Mission in Kentucky, and Jerri Subuto, a missionary in Africa
Each year a scholarship is awarded to a graduating L.D. Bell senior that was a student at Bellaire Elementary
UMW volunteers at Bellaire weekly to assemble backpacks with weekend food for children in need
Blankets are donated and distributed at Bethlehem Community Center
Circle of Light provides Goody Bags for teachers and staff at Bellaire Elementary during Teacher Appreciation Week
The Lydias (a UMW sub group) meet with female clients of Mission Central, providing life skills programs and fellowship.
Membership is extended to any woman who commits herself to our purpose and chooses to participate in meetings, prayer, study, and service. Church membership is not required.
